What is this Over Optimisation Penalty?
In November of 2003 (often termed the 'Florida Update') Google introduced
a particularly noticeable, major update and revision to its indexing
algorithm. (Just in time for Christmas, it seems!)
This widely noticed change caused quite a stir in the search engine
optimisation world (with more than a few still recovering from it today).
It
saw many top-ranked, well optimised sites (literally overnight) fall from
their esteemed position - into the depths of the search listings.
The
reason the SEM experts have been giving involve what they've commonly
termed an 'Over Optimisation Penalty' (OOP).
In
other words, an OOP was applied to sites that were deemed 'too well
optimised' (and thereby providing potentially misleading results). The
affect sites were dropped from there higher rankings and it seems that
they've been somehow penalised in a fixed way - so that even when the
owners changed their websites, it still seem to remain penalised (with no
indication of when Google may decide to release them from there 'degraded'
state).
While this particular 'Florida Update' is concerned with Google, you can
feel quite certain that other search engines, will be taking note of the
way Google has done things.
Some Main Issues
To
avoid being mistakenly slapped with an OOP, a few pointers follow.
a)
Don't ever spam, which is cramming too many key words together (this
hasn't been a good thing for years)
b)
Do not be over zealous when choosing the actual text of your links. Don't
have your text links contain an exact 'keyword phrase' and then link it to
another page which seems to be 'optimised' for that same exact phrase... (ie.
the same specific term appearing in the title tag, meta tags and near the
beginning of the body text or several times over in the text)... it seems
that the search engines are now more picky and may now be feeling that
this is just a bit 'too much targeting' (ie unrealistic or unnatural and
thereby manipulative)
c)
Aim for a broader use of your keywords. Certainly avoid using
them too frequently in the exact same order and the exact same phrase.
Vary the order of their usage, use synonyms and inter-space them with
other words.
d)
Take special care to watch out for the OOP if your business is a
competitive and popular one. Some SEOs feel that more popular terms seem
to be more sensitive.
e)
These recommendations reflect the need to work more creatively and
carefully with language and keywords.- Providing balanced, broad and
varied content.
f)
Build incoming links slow but surely. Sudden large jumps in the number of
inbound links to your site can look quite unnatural. This may quite cause
your site to be negatively flagged. (In fact such sudden jumps in incoming
links may quite loudly shout 'link farm', 'link club' or whatever).
